AWRC Publishes Fact Sheet on Algal Blooms in Streams and Ponds

Have you ever wondered what that green stuff is growing in ponds, lakes, and nearby streams? Well, it is usually algae and at times there can be a lot of it.  This excess growth is an algal bloom.

These blooms are a nuisance that negatively impacts the aesthetics, recreation, and aquatic life of the water body. However, algal blooms can also be harmful, where certain algal blooms can produce toxins when stressed by environmental conditions or as they die. These harmful algal blooms are a serious health risk.

The Arkansas Water Resources Center has recently published a fact sheet about algal blooms. The fact sheet talks about what makes nuisance and harmful algal blooms different and who to contact if you suspect that an algal bloom is harmful or you are unsure.
